We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
