The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
